God is the Creator and Sustainer of the World

Emmanuel Chucks

MAIN TEXT: GENESIS 1:1, ISAIAH 40:12-14

HIGHLIGHT VERSE: GENESIS 1:1
“In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.” (NIV)

TOPIC POINTS:

  1. God Created the Universe – Genesis 1:1, Isaiah 40:12
  2. His Understanding Surpasses Man’s – Isaiah 40:13-14

INTRODUCTION:

Throughout history, the origin of all things has fascinated humans both great and small. Many theories have been put forward by many cultures to explain the creation of the world. The most relevant in today’s age is the scientific theory of the Big Bang.

Of all these, the only trustworthy account is the very account of He who was there when everything was made. God has been so kind to reveal to us this record in the Scriptures that we should not be left in the dark.

GOD CREATED THE UNIVERSE

– GENESIS 1:1, ISAIAH 40:12, PSALM 19:1-4

Every other creation narrative, including the Big Bang theory, has creation coming from a substance of God’s creation, whether cloud, water, land, sun, or the “singularity.” God’s account in Genesis exposes the absurdity of such theories.

“In the beginning, God…” When there was nothing else, there was only God, the uncreated. In the beginning, not referring to a point in time but to the birth of time itself. That space and time was created by God from nothing (ex nihilo) by fiat.

In Isaiah 40:12, we see how insignificant all of creation is in comparison to the Creator. Just like a human measuring things with his fingers and weighing things on a scale, God is able to do the same with all creation.

HIS UNDERSTANDING SURPASSES MAN’S

– ISAIAH 40:13-14,28, PSALM 150

God demonstrated His infinite knowledge and understanding in the creation and ordering of the universe. It will take humans eternity to grasp the intricacies of the beauty of God’s creation. We should be moved in humility to praise, thank and honor God for His understanding which is leaps and bounds above ours (Job 38).

God’s understanding is not only seen in the beginning of creation but also in the sustaining of creation. Scripture lets us know that the universe is upheld by God’s powerful word. In Him we live, move and have our being, in Him all things all things hold together (Revelation 4:11).

CONCLUSION:

God’s account of creation in the Scriptures is not just superior but authoritative to answer all questions concerning the creation of man and the universe. All things in creation, including space and time itself, were made by God from nothing just by the sheer power of His word. He sustains all creation by that same word.

We as humans cannot understand His craft nor replicate His understanding. Our duty according to God’s will is to praise and honor Him as Yahweh, the God who created and sustains all things.

Thou art worthy, Thou art worthy, O Lord
To receive glory, honor and power
For Thou hast created all things, and for thy pleasure
They are and were created
